MOTION FOR BRISTOL TRADES UNION COUNCIL, APRIL MEETING
The following was agreed at meeting of Bristol Rail Branch on 25TH MARCH 2009:
DEVELOPING RAIL TRANSPORT IN THE BRISTOL AREA
Bristol RMT Rail Branch calls upon to Bristol Trades Union Council to organise a local campaign, with the support of transport unions in the region, for
- the reopening of the Portishead Railway line,
- for a new railway platform to be built on the Severn Beach line, adjacent to the park and ride site at Shirehampton.
The cost of re-opening the Portishead line would be in the region of £15 million.
The new platform at Shirehampton would cost about £1 million pound. The cost should be included in the Rapid Transit scheme for Bristol. There is £48 million going to be spent on new park and ride sites around Bristol, and a new fleet of Bendy Buses also. The cost of this new platform should come out of this £48 million budget.
The campaign to involve local trades unions, trades union councils, South West TUC and transport pressure groups, and include petitions, lobbies and demonstrations
